Spring at last (Westy 52)

Nearly ran out of time this week!

Went for a walk with the girls this afternoon, and shot some frame of them blowing the 'Fairies away'.

Wasn't that pleased with any of the results so got the 105 Macro out instead and shot this image.

I hardly ever use the lens now - I really struggle with Macro work, but have just ordered a new tripod, so maybe it is something I will revisit.

Converted to B&W with Silver Efex - Slight burn to the background.

Pleased with the result!

Young Starlet (Westy 52 Project)

Back to the portraits for this week...

Megan loves her new glasses that she got free with a comic, and asked if I would take her photo with them on.

This is natural light, just inside the front door - Setting spot metering on the D300 here throws the background to virtually black.

I used the 85mm wide open (f/1.8) which gives a really narrow depth of field, so I had to ensure that I nailed the focus on the eyes.

Slight sharpening of the glasses in CS4, then resized for the web.

Praise indeed!

Really pleased that my "An Artist's Tools" image was so highly commended in the Telegraph blog this week;

"This photo also stood out because of its technical excellence. The crispness and perfectly judged lighting directs our attention to the make-up kit itself."

Thanks again Kate!

Closed Season (Westy 52 Project)

Closed Season

This weeks' images was taken during a work trip to Brighton.

I took a walk on the Palace Pier one evening and found it totally deserted (other than the couple in the photo!)

I only had the G9 with me, so propped it on a bin, and took this 0.6 second exposure.

I love the warm yellow light contrasting against the darkening sky - The long exposure also blurred the couple, which I think works well in this case.

The G9 continues to impress - The noise levels are fantastic for a long exposure compact shot.

Hope you like it...

An Artist's Tools (Westy 52 Project)

This weeks' images is my first 'still life' that I have posted as a Project 52 image.

This was taken with the D300 + 85 1.4, using natural light coming through a net curtain (a perfect diffuser).

The B&W conversion was done in Silver Efex pro (as usual) - I boosted the contrast and black point, which I think really suits the image.
