Focus on Imaging 09

Had a great day at FOI... Very busy show, which was very encouraging to see in the current credit crisis climate.

Got a great deal on a Lastolite Ezybox, which I will put to good use later this week.

Really tempted by some of the Elinchrom lighting deals... I will pick a set up in the Summer once the prices settle down.

Thanks to Dave for helping me to keep my hand out of my pocket (and for loosing the car!)

Bubbleicious Bathtime (Westy52 Project)

I was struggling for ideas this week - I had decided that I wouldn't do another straight Portrait...

I took some shots of Caitlin jumping, but wasn't happy with them - Thought I would bath the girls and then see what I could do with them in Photoshop...

Then I saw this!

Grabbed the D300 with the 85 1.4 (at f11 for this shot) and a single SB800 flash.

Pretty pleased with the results - Yes it may be 'another portrait' but I think it is different enough to get away with!

Sometimes the images that you don't plan work out the best.

Cartoon Girlfriend

Picked up a great new plug-in for Aperture (ToonIt!) - It does this sort of thing (i.e. turn images into Cartoons).

Some really nice effects.

The Boss (Westy 52 Project)

I decided to go for a different style of 'Portrait' for this weeks' image.

This was taken using the budget studio set-up again (1x SB800 and 1x SB600) and a simple white sheet as a background.

I used a low shooting position, shooting up at Clare, to emphasis the feeling of 'power and control'. I think it gives the image a very 'corporate' look.
The 50mm 1.8, used here at f2, narrowed the depth of field which picked out the hands, and threw the rest of the image into soft focus.

Converted to B&W is Photoshop CS4.

The SB-800 was shot through a white brolley. The SB-600 was shot on low power against a white reflector to provide the fill light, as seen in the diagram here.

Give me Shelter (Westy 52 Project)

Give me Shelter

With all the disruption this week, my pick of the weeks' shots HAD to have snow in it!

This was actually taken with the CanonG9 compact (a first for a 52 Project shot).

I think it has handled the colours really well (Nikons tend to over do 'reds') whilst also keeping the snow bright...

Very little post production either - slight boost in saturation levels, but other than that, a straight from the camera JPEG.

I will try NOT to have Megan in my shot next week (but she is such a willing model at the moment).

Mobile Blogging from here.

More Snow!

The G9 again... Snow mode handling the scene very nicely;

The bright snow also allowed a fast enough shutter speed to stop Caitlin 'in-flight'.

Spot on follow focus too - Is this really a 'compact'?! Is it way too good for that.

Perfect White Balance, Spot on exposure (in the snow!) - It is VERY impressive.

Big Bruv (Westy 52 Project)

Week 5 - Probably the toughest week so far...

I have had very little time to shoot this week, and was all set to post a shot that I took yesterday when I decided to take some shots of Caitlin and 'Big Bruv' (James) this afternoon.

This is shot using 2 speedlights; SB-800 camera left (through a brolley), large white reflector camera right, and an sb-600 as a hairlight.

This is still far from perfect (the lhs of James' face is way too hot for example), but I think the expressions from the two of them make up for that...

I will keep practising with the set-up until I nail it!

Hope you like the results.
